Cart32 is able to create real time shipping quotes with the major shippers (UPS/FedEx/USPS/DHL). Use the quick links below to find specific information about setups and more.

Setting Up A Real Time Shipping Type
Creating a real time shipping type with Cart32 is simple. Cart32 (and the shippers) just need three pieces of information to create an accurate quote: weightoriginating address, and destination address. We'll start by talking about product weights.

Setting Up Product Weights
This article assumes you are familiar with standard product options and product form code. If you are not, please read the article named Product Options - Standard. Before a shipping quote can be made, we need all our products to have a weight. When using real time shipping all weights are in pounds and these weights are always rounded to the nearest tenth of a pound. Both the unit of weight measurement (pounds) and the precision (0.1 pounds) are set by the shippers.

In the following product form I have added a standard option for weight. The weight for the T-Shirt will be 3 pounds.

<form method="post" action="http://Cart32.com/cgi-bin/cart32.exe/test-additem">
A Nice T-Shirt for $19.95
<input type="hidden" name="item" value="T-Shirt" />
<input type="hidden" name="price" value="19.95" />

<input type="hidden" name="weight" value="3" />

<input type="submit" value="Buy Now" />
</form>

Specifying Your Originating Address
The originating address used for shipping calculations is found on the Settings --> Company tab inside your Cart32 administration. This address will also appear on the thank you page after a customer makes an order.

(Note To Clients Using Drop Shipping: If you use drop shipping you need to make sure the originating address is the address of your wholesaler's business. The product will ship from there, not from your business address. As of this writing (Aug. 2011) there is no way to specify a separate originating address for your shipping types, but we are working on this for the future.)

Specifying Your Destination Address
The destination address for a shipping quote is based on the information the customer puts into his/her shipping fields during checkout. Normally this is okay, but there are times when customers mess something up like entering state abbreviations incorrectly. For this reason we have created an article called Tightening Your Shipping Configuration. Please refer to that article for more information.

Creating The Shipping Type In Your Cart
Now that we've set up our products with weights and got our originating address in place, we're ready to create our shipping types for the customers to choose from. In the following example we will create a shipping type using USPS. There are a lot of options on shipping types, but most are self-explanatory, so I will leave reading them to you. Here is how we would set up our example:
  1. Log into your Cart32 Administration

  2. Navigate to the Shopping Cart tab --> Shipping

  3. In the field labeled Name, specify a name for the shipping type. It can be called anything you like. In our example it will be USPS - Express

  4. After entering your shipping type name, click the Add Shipping Type button

  5. When the page reloads, click the link labeled Edit next to our newly created shipping type

  6. We need to specify when this shipping type will show up. To do that we modify the Area Settings. This allows us to choose which field the customer fills out to compare against. For example, we can make our shipping type only show up if the Shipping Country is Equal To a list of countries. Here are the three parts we'll change:
    • Change the dropdown labeled Area Settings to Shipping Country
    • Leave the dropdown for comparison set to Equal To
    • Fill out the last field with a semi-colon separated list of countries (text values) you want to have this show up for. In our example we'll put US;USA;United States since we only ship to the US

  7. Mark the radio button for By US Postal Service

  8. Select Express Mail from the dropdown list

  9. Click Save

Testing Our New Shipping Type
To test the shipping type you simply add an item to your cart and begin the checkout process. On the last page (right before you clickConfirm Order) you will see your shipping options. If you've set the shipping type up correctly you'll see the option available on that page with a quote.

Configuring FedEx & DHL Accounts
All of the shipping companies except USPS require an account before you can get online quotes from them. The following sections explain how to register with the different shippers so you can use their real time rate quotes.

USPS
USPS does not require registration. The United States Postal/Parcel Service is a government entity and is therefore open to all the public. This includes the online rate quotes tools.

UPS
First you will need to register for a UPS account. Once you have your account, follow the steps below.

  1. Log into your Cart32 Administration
  2. Navigate to the Shopping Cart --> Shipping
  3. Click the link labeled Run UPS Shipping Wizard to start your registration
  4. Fill out the fields on the popup and follow the on screen instructions

FedEx

DHL
Setting up your DHL account is simple. First, go to DHL and register your online account with them and get an account number from them. After you've done that, follow these steps to set up the DHL account in Cart32:

  1. Log into your Cart32 Administration

  2. Navigate to the Shopping Cart --> Shipping

  3. Click the link labeled Run DHL Shipping Wizard to start your registration

  4. Fill out the fields on the popup and follow the on screen instructions
